Assemblage Node
2020 pinyu china public art Installation Design CompetitionSwings, mirror shad and lighting ground
"Assemblage Node" is a design medium inspired by the original renewal project launched by Pinyu · Lingyunli and based on the characteristics of the site located in Xuhui district of Shanghai. It is a public art installation for people to assembling, resting and socialising, to interact in ways that mimic natural phenomena, and to connect people by inspiring their behaviour.
The installation is divided into three segments, namely swings, a mirrored shed and the ground platform that extends infinitely, and its design elements are inspired by the deconstruction of Thousand Paper Cranes.
The “Assemblage Node” is a permanent device that uses a metaphor to compare people to a flock of birds, while the whole thing resembles a tree. The swing is likened to a hanging tree branch, which provides people with rest and an unintended connection and interaction with others. The traction rope under the extension of the mirror shed roof pulls the convertible parts to bring a different sensory experience. Each triangles shape represents the deconstruction of Thousand Paper Cranes, and they are rebuilt by the interplay of people. The mirror-like platform creates another atmosphere of shifting perception, enabling further subconscious interactions through the infinite extension of the structure. The three are connected and influenced like the relationship of the tree and its nutrition apparatus.
